1) Stand back from your frustrating situation and say, “The good news is…” and then finish the sentence. Yes, you’re in late for work, but the good news is… there’s no traffic when it’s not rush hour. Yes, your relationship just ended, but the good news is… now you can cook with the mushrooms he hated and you’re open to meeting someone who appreciates and loves you the way you deserve.

2) Shift your perspective completely in the other direction and say, “At least I’m not…” and imagine all the ways it could be worse. Yes, you should have been paid more for your hard work, but at least you have a job to pay the rent in the first place. And yes, your last date was another disaster, but at least you have friends at the ready to cheer you up and you now have a super funny story to give them in return. This step is like taking that “glass half-full or half-empty” and saying, “Hey, at least there’s some water in it at all.”
